We are looking for your photos
Since Fr Cremin left, you'll have noticed that we have been unable to bring you photos of some events. As one of the camera enthusiasts in the parish, Fr Cremin had the advantage of being present of necessity at all holy occasions and most social ones. If you have a good camera or camera-phone (5 megapixels or more) you are well equipped to supply quality photos of the occasions which you attend. Pictures are displayed on our pages at 750 pixels wide so the ones you send in should be at least that size, we will happily reduce larger ones if you can't do it yourself. If you also include captions for the photos it would be an enormous help. Please submit photos to: news@kilmichael.org

The Legend of Kilmichael
Last week’s newsletter gave the story of the foundation of the parish of Kilmichael. However, there is also a legend surrounding its beginning. The story began in Rome where it was forbidden to cut your hair on a Friday. One holy man disregarded this rule and the bells of Rome rang out in protest. At his subsequent trial he was condemned to wander the world until he found a goat grazing on a lios (ringfort). There he was to settle and build a church.
Michael ,the holy man did what he was asked and after many years he came to Ireland. He travelled south and took the road leading from the northwest towards the coastal towns of Kinsale and Skibbereen. This road came through Iffanloe (the area now known as Kilmichael). He sought refreshments at a local house. The woman welcomed him in but asked him to fetch the goat for milking. He found the animal grazing on a lios and knew his quest was over. The church was built in the area now known as St. Michael’s Cemetery, Moneycusker. Kilmichael Historical Society

I do realise that many are under enormous pressure and stress at this time of year, especially those with cattle to feed in this very late Spring. Hopefully with a rise in temperatures over the next week, the grass will grow soon again.
Bearing in mind the tragic accident in Skibbereen last weekend, I appeal to all road users to take care on the roads and to those using farm machinery to think safety.
If you are not too busy on your computer, have a look at www.catholicmass.co
The Mass explained by Mike Cumbie or Catholic Mass from a Protestant perspective. Also abandonedireland.com for some very interesting photos of abandoned buildings in Ireland.

Dromleigh N.S.

The Credit Union Quiz Team and their families travelled to the RDS, Dublin last weekend to compete in the All Ireland Final. It was an early start for most as the bus left Dromleigh at 6.30. It was the start of an amazing day when all the children were treated to a great day out. In total one hundred teams from all thirty two counties competed, with fifty teams in the senior section. The quiz master was Marty Whelan with commentary from Lorcan Murray. The occasion was also recorded for Nationwide. The standard was exceptionally high from every team present and when the final results were called the Dromleigh team of Anne Marie O'Mahony, Alex Callanan, Nicky John Dromey and Kieran Murphy came in fifth place, an exceptional result. The whole Dromleigh community is extremely proud of them and they deserve the warmest congratulations. The officers from Macroom Credit Union who travelled with them deserve thanks for looking after everybody so well on the day. An exhausted group finally reached Kilmichael at 11 pm.

St. Michael’s Church, Cooldorrihy
The old church at Moneycusker is not the only church in Kilmichael built on a ringfort. So is Cooldorrihy. It was built on a fort called Lios Mangain and was known as Séipéilín an Leasa (the church of the lios). The story goes that Fr. Horgan the parish priest asked the local landlord for a piece of land on which to build a church. The landlord was unwilling but did not want to be seen to refuse; so he gave the land with the rinfort. The priest was determined to provide a place of worship for his flock and proceeded to build his church. The present church at Cooldorrihy was built in 1870 by Fr. James O’Driscoll Jnr. PP Kilmichael. It replaces an earlier structure built in 1791. A plaque in the church sacristy confirms this and names Fr. Cornelius Horgan as the priest. Nothing is known about this building although the 1842 Ordnance Survey shows it as being T shaped. There was also an earlier Penal Chapel in Cooldorrihy (like the one in Kilnadur). This was located at the eastern end of Cooldoorihy on Bradleys’s farm and that field is still known as Páirc an tSéipéal. The present church is built along the old Butter Road which ran through Kilmichael and was close to a large pre-famine village at Cooldorrihy Cross.

St. Enda’s Church, Johnstown
The present Church of St. Enda’s in Johnstown was built in 1870 (the same year as Cooldorrihy) by Fr. James O’Driscoll, PP Kilmichael. We know there was an earlier church on this site as it is shown in the 1842 Ordnance Survey Map. That church replaced the Penal Chapel in Kilnadur which can still be seen today. These simple structures were built at a time when the Penal Laws were being relaxed in Ireland and replaced the earlier mass rocks. The massrocks were located in secluded places where fugitive priests offered mass on rough stone altars. There are some massrocks in Kilmichael including one at Kilnadur. This probably preceded the Penal Chapel as the place of worship in the Johnstown/ Kilnadur area. There is also another good example of a massrock in “Carriganaffrin” in Coolaclevane.
During Penal Times some priests were allowed if they had guarantors. A 1714 list of priests of Co. Cork included “Denis O’Leary, Kilmehill and Macloneigh, Suretyes, Edmd Barrett, Thos. Murphy of Curahaly.” Edmund Barrett was owner of Carrigboy Castle.

Hi All,
Johnstown Vintage Club have produced their DVD of the Vintage day out in Johnstown last year. I’m sure all who attended would agree that it was an excellent family day out. The DVD highlights the tremendous effort made by club members and their many helpers in running the day. From the cutting the corn with the reeper and binder, stoking the corn to the threshing and milling of the grain. We saw lovely demonstrations of bread baking, basket making and for me the highlight which was the chopping of the furze with the furze machine, the first ever example of precision chop. Over all it is well done and we look forward to this years event. DVD’s can be had from club members, Johnstown Pub and by calling 086 3738764.

Shanacashel– Last Saturday night “Our Crazy Wonderland by The Kids Fun Group”
25 talented children put on a highly entertaining and funny show for their families, with plenty singing and banter to keep their audience on the edge of their seats. All sorts appeared from Angels the Fairytale Princess to Katie Taylor to Lady Gaga, Even Pavarotti appeared back from the dead for the night. It was all crowded off with some local heroes “The Boys of Kilmichael” ambushing the audience and breaking into their ballads. Congratulations to 25 wonderful children (ranging from ages 5-12) on the major success of their show.

St. Finbarr’s Church, Toames
St. Finbarr’s Church, Toames was built in 1832 and is the parish church. It was built by Fr. James O’Driscoll Snr. PP. In fact he is interred under the altar there. It was constructed around the same time as the building beside it. Toames N.S. was the first national school in Kilmichael. It was opened in 1833, two years after the introduction of national education in 1831. It was an unusual structure as it was two storey with the boys’ school on the ground floor and the girls’ school on the first floor. It was in use until the early 1900s.
The Toames area was part of the separate parish of Macloneigh until the 1700s. In fact our parish was known as the United Parishes of Kilmichael and Macloneigh right into the 1800s. The original parish church was at Macloneigh and it was fitting that Toames church was dedicated to St. Finbarr as that saint had long associations with Macloneigh. His father Amergin was born there and Finbarr probably travelled along the banks of the River Lee to Gougane Barra and back.

St Michaels Well
Holy Wells are a feature of almost every parish in the country and Kilmichael is no exception. The most well known is St. Michael’s Well in Cooldaniel. The origin of holy wells is uncertain but many are thought to be pre-christian. We do know that St. Michael’s Well stretches back hundreds of years and was the main venue for rounds performed on Michaelmas Day, the feast of St. Michael on 29th September. An earlier version of the rounds also included the recitation of prayers at the old cemetery in Moneycusker.
This day was treated as a holiday in the parish and when the religious side of the day was over the celebrations moved to the Pound Field in Cooldorrihy. This was a field opposite Cooldorrihy Church. There, people from far and wide gathered, with hawkers using the occasion to sell their wares. Farm animals were bought and sold and when that was over children’s games and races began. As a lot of alcohol was consumed very often the event ended with faction fights between various warring families. This sometimes led to serious injury and on one occasion the parish priest Fr. James O’Driscoll had to intervene resulting in a slight injury to his horse. This incident led to prosecutions for some of those involved. One gravestone in Kilmichael Cemetery dating from the 1700s mentions a John Murphy “who was inhumanely murdered on 29th September”. He was almost certainly a victim of a faction fight. As time went on the fair was discontinued but the races continued into the 20th Century. The venue was changed to a field on Hayes’ farm in Cooldorrihy. The rounds also died out but Kilmichael Historical Society leads prayers at St. Michael’s Well on 29th September. The well was renovated by Kilmichael Historical Society some years ago.

Priests of Kilmichael
An uncle and nephew; Fr.James O’Driscoll and his namesake Fr. James O’Driscoll Jnr. were parish priests of Kilmichael continuously from 1814 to 1886. They shaped not only the religious lives but also the living conditions of their parishioners. From 1840 they served together in the parish as parish priest and curate and when the older man died in 1857 his nephew succeeded him.
Between them they built all three churches in the parish and many of the schools, including the first, Toames in 1833. It was Fr. O’Driscoll who made the application to build Dromleigh N.S in 1837. It was opened in 1840. Both priests were leading members of Kilmichael Famine Relief Committee and wrote many letters to newspapers and to the authorities seeking aid for their parishioners and highlighting the severity of the famine here in Kilmichael. Indeed, much of our knowledge of that period in Kilmichael history comes from their writings. They succeeded in getting Daniel O’’Connell to write a letter seeking aid for the up to 12,000 inhabitants. Fr. O’Driscoll Snr. consecrated ground in Gurranreigh to allow the locals bury their dead locally rather than attempt the long journey to Kilmichael Cemetery in Moneycusker.
The priests lived in Clonmoyle, on the farm now owned by Mc Sweeeys. Fr. James O’Driscoll Snr. is buried under the altar in Toames Church. His nephew is buried in the churchyard in Cooldorrihy.

Tirelton NS
The road to Páirc Uí Chaoimh for the schools' county hurling finals ended for our team last Tuesday in Ballincollig. Having defeated Aherla, Vicarstown and Minane Bridge in the group games, we qualified for a semi-final against Lisgoold. On the day Tirelton played very well but late goals for the East Cork team proved too much and we bowed out. However, the training and practising the boys did at 11 o'clock every morning for the past month ensured further development of their skills and this came through in all their games.
Congratulations to Aoife Foley, who has been selected for the Cork Primary Game Football team. Aoife will play at one of this years Munster SFC matches. Aoife had to go through three trial matches before being picked and it is a great achievement to be picked from all the schools in Cork.
This week, as part of National Walk To School Week, Tirelton children had a 'Feet First Friday' where parents, children and staff all walked to school. The weather was glorious for the walk and everyone enjoyed it very much.

Ringforts
Kilmichael is rich in archaeological remains and one of the most common is the ringfort. These forts (also called rath or lios) were built in Ireland even up to 1,100 AD and were thought to be protected farm homesteads. A ringfort is usually circular and surrounded by a bank and fosse (trench). Homes would be erected inside this area. Animals were brought into the enclosure at night to protect against wild animals and possibly theft. They often contained underground passages or souterrains. The exact purpose of these passages are unknown but may have been used to store food.
Kilmichael has many fine examples of ringforts. One of the best is on top of Deshure Hill (called Lismore on maps). It also contains a very complete souterrain. Townland names such as Lisnacuddy point to the presence of a ringfort. In fact most townlands in Kilmichael contain at least one lios and some such as Carrigboy and Deshure have more. They are a protected structure. In fact, the belief in Ireland that there were the dwelling places of the fairies ensured the survival of many over the years. Kilmichael Historical Society

Dunmanway Family Resource will be running their Community Summer camps from Monday 8th July until Friday the 12th July and Monday 19th August until Friday 23th August in Dunmanway. The camps will run from Monday to Friday from 10am – 3pm daily. Children, volunteers and staff have a great time doing a range of activities which last year included chocolate making, pizza making, t-shirt printing, swimming, arts and crafts, football, table-tennis and much, much more. These camps are low cost camps to make Summer Camp accessible for all children –we can only provide this service with the help of our amazing volunteers. Last year we were incredibly lucky to have fabulous volunteers from local secondary schools, third level students and adults helping in the camp. We are looking for volunteers for this years camps and would welcome any applicants over the age of 16 years. Applicants must complete an application and garda vetting (18+) form and supply two references – non relative. Application froms can be obtained by e-mailing kirstie@dunmanwayfrc.com or calling the Dunmanway Family Resource Centre on 023 88 56818. The camps are fully booked for this year. Closing date for volunteer applications is Monday 3rd June. No applications will be accepted after this date.

The Battle of Deshure
The monument erected by Kilmichael Historical at the cross in Terelton remembers the Battle of Deshure which took place on 25th January 1822. The battle took place between the Whiteboys and a group of the Muskerry Yeomanry led by Colonel Mitchell. The Whiteboys were one of the many secret societies which were set up to fight for land rights in the late 1700s. There were so called because of the white garments they wore over their ordinary clothes. They were both a disguise and an insignia.
Because times were particularly tough in the 1820s; there was a resurgence of the Whiteboys around that time. Many incidents took place around that time involving the Whiteboys. This involved raids on landlords to acquire arms and ammunition. One such raid took place on the house of Benjamin Swete, landlord, of Greenville. However, he had been tipped off beforehand and the Yeomanry were lying in wait. At least five of the Irish were killed.
The Whiteboys decided to attack Swetes again on January 25th and on that day they assembled on Deshure Hill. A rifle brigade arrived from Macroom. A shotgun was accidentally discharged and panic broke out. This led to fighting. Several people were killed and more arrested. These prisoners were put on trial in Cork on February 19th. Twelve people were found guilty of having arms and of firing at certain persons. Four of these were hanged at Deshure on a specially erected gallows on March 1st 1822. There were Richard Drummy, Daniel Cronin, Timothy Hallahan and Denis Murphy. A fifth man who took part in an earlier incident was also hanged. Kilmichael Historical Society

The Gearagh
The townlands of Gearagh East and West form part of the parish of Kilmichael. Combined with other townlands in Kilmichael and some in Iveleary and Macroom they form the hinterland of the River Lee called the Gearagh. The word “gearagh” means wooded river. The name comes from the ancient forest which grew on a complex of river channels of the River Lee. The area formed when the river left the mountains to the west and flowed into a broad flat mud plain at the end of the last Ice Age about ten thousand years ago. Gradually trees grew on the many islands formed when the river split into many channels. Over the years the area grew into a vast forest and became a mysterious place where you dare not venture into unless you knew the area well. This unique area has been compared to the Everglades in Florida. During the 18th century the Gearagh was the refuge of an outlaw named Seán Rua na Gaoire. His real name is reputed to be John Murphy and legend has it that he came from the Terelton area. He had been abroad with the Irish Brigade and managed to hold on to his guns when he came back to Ireland. He was a very good shot and always managed to keep ahead of the authorities. He is said to have slept under an oak tree on an island in the Gearagh and to this day a map of the area shows one area as Illaun Sean Rua (Sean Rua’s Island).
This unique area changed forever when the area was flooded in the 1950s to provide a reservoir for the electricity generating station on the Lee. Kilmichael Historical Society

Creameries in Kilmichael
The Co-operative Wholesale Society opened the first creamery in Terelton in 1900 on a site bought from John Good. The first manager was F.O. Baker. The other staff included Mary Murray (butter maker), Timothy Murphy (engineman) and M. Corcoran (general hand). Milk was bought and separated here. The separated milk was returned to farmers and butter was made with the rest. The butter was transported to Duniskey Railway Station by horse car. From there it was transported to various outlets to be sold; including to markets in England.
In 1911 Terelton Creamery was sold to Newmarket Dairy Company. Although they in turn sold to The Dairy Disposal Board in 1932 the Newmarket name was retained until Ballyclough Co-op bought out the company in 1972. Butter was sold under the brand name “Lee Valley”. Cheese was manufactured in Terelton until the 1920s.
The Terelton group of creameries included branches at Teergay, Toames, Shinagh, Mossgrove, Inchigeela and Bengour. A travelling creamery was introduced in 1938 and collected milk from the western side of the parish. This operated until Shanlaragh Creamery was opened in 1959.
When Ballyclough Co-op took over in 1972 all separating and butter making was moved to Mallow. With the advent of refrigerated bulk milk tanks the tradition of taking milk to the creamery died out. In 1990 Ballyclough Co-op amalgamated with Mitchelstown Co-op to form Dairygold. All small local creameries had closed. Now only the shop in Terelton serves as a reminder of days past.

Terelton Cemetery
I’ve been having a look at Terelton Cemetery and it needs continuous cutting and tidying. Earlier this week I cut the grass and I’ve also sprayed the inside perimeter along the boundaries and also along the main pathways with a view to giving them a run of the strimmer when the spray has taken effect.
I am encouraging owners of plots and family graves to do some maintenance to them over the coming week or two. Some graves are very well kept, some need attention such as weeding and pruning. I am of the belief that the cemetery should look its best all year round and not just for special occasions. I would be happier if people looked after their own plots. I will endeavour to keep the main grass areas cut regularly and I will look at setting up a committee to maintain the cemetery at a later date. At some stage I may look as asking for help to powerwash the slab fence. I’ll see and take advice when the grass near it will die off. Meanwhile more care of plots please. Fr. Pat.

The Barretts of Carrigboy

Carrigboy Castle now owned by the Kelleher family was the home of the Barretts. They were landlords in the area and they were thought to have come into Carrigboy at the beginning of the eighteenth century as middlemen to the Colthursts. They were a branch of the Barretts who owned Ballincollig Castle. In 1766 the lands of Carrigboy were held by Edmund Barrett, He is said to have been a Protestant although evidence from a 1766 list of the inhabitants of Kilmichael show most of his family remained Catholic and his descendants were Catholic. On his death the estate was inherited by his son Edward. He was one of the original signatories of the application to build Dromleigh N.S in 1837. Edward was succeeded by his son John Edward.
During the famine years, John Edward was treasurer of the Poor Relief Committee of the United parishes of Kilmichael and Macloneigh and was one of its most generous subscribers. He married Catherine O’Sullivan of Carriganass Castle, Kealkil in 1856. When he died in 1894, Carrigboy passed to his sister Honoria Harding, a widow. She was not a permanent resident of Carrigboy but it was she who donated the altar of Cooldorrihy Church and a plaque at the left hand side of the church marks her death in 1907. Her son Dr. J.J. Harding now inherited the estate. He sold it on to John Kelleher in 1928. The Barrett tombstone can be seen in Moneycusker Cemetery. Kilmichael Historical Society.

Rally for Life!

Come and join thousands of concerned citizens as we stand up for life and make our voices heard for mothers and their unborn children. Together let's help keep Ireland abortion free. Saturday, July 6th, Parnell Square, Dublin @2pm. For further information please phone 01 8730465’.

A time for clarity and truth

We value the skill and efforts of our doctors, nurses and other care professionals who have helped to earn Ireland’s place as one of the safest countries in the world for mothers and their babies during pregnancy. Catholic Church teaching is clear: where a seriously ill pregnant woman needs medical treatment which may put the life of her baby at risk, such treatments are ethically permissible provided every effort is made to save both the mother and her baby.
This is different from abortion, which is the direct and intentional taking of the innocent life of the unborn. No matter what legislation is passed in any country, abortion is, and always will be, gravely wrong.
We remain convinced that enhanced medical guidelines, which do not envisage the direct and intentional killing of the unborn, could provide the necessary clarity as well as a morally, legally and medically acceptable way forward. While good health can normally be restored, life, once taken, can never, never be restored.
The above is an excerpt from the statement by the Catholic Bishops of Ireland ‘A time to uphold the right to life’, issued on 11 June 2013. See www.catholicbishops.ie for the full statement.
Prayer for the Child in the Womb
Guide the work of doctors, nurses and midwives. May the life of a mother and her baby in the womb be equally cherished and respected. Lord Jesus, help us to choose life in every decision we take. Amen

Massrocks
The Penal Laws were in force in Ireland during the 17th and early 18th centuries. They imposed many restrictions on the lives of Catholics. This included education, employment and religious freedom. For that reason the practice of religion took place in secret. As time went on the laws were relaxed gradually. Some priests were allowed in areas if they had guarantors. A 1714 list of priests in Co. Cork included “Denis O’Leary, Kilmehill and Macloneigh. Suretyes, Edmd. Barrett, Thos. Murphy of Curahaly”.
Many outlawed priests travelled incognito and ministered to the people secretly. There was a price on their heads, £20 for information leading to the capture of a priest and £50 for a bishop. Mass was celebrated in lonely areas. Sentries kept watch to warn of approaching strangers.
There are several massrock sites in Kilmichael. Two of the best known are “Carriganaffrin” in Coolaclevane and one in Kilnadur. These were probably in use up to the building of the Penal Churches in Cooldorrihy and Kilnadur respectively. These churches were small and basic and were built as the Penal Laws gradually died out. It was a proud moment for the school after all the hard work they put into the project. Children from the Green School Committee were presented with certificates in recognition of their work. The school were Commended for their efforts and received a cheque for €100 in the recent Cork County Council School Garden Competition. A special thank you to all the parents, pupils and teachers who put such effort into the garden in recent months.

A special word of thanks to teacher Ann O’Dwyer for all the work she put into preparation for the event.

St. Michael’s Cemetery, Moneycusker

Kilmichael Historical Society is taking part in a project to record the headstones in the old graveyards of the parish. West Cork Development Partnership recently provided funding for training people in recording these important historical sites. KIlmichael Historical Society was one of the groups who were successful in their application for this training. Over the last few weeks members and friends have been busy recording the inscriptions on gravestones in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Moneycusker. All gravestones have also been photographed and will eventually be available on the Irish graves website.
The survey has shown up some very interesting and very unusual gravestones and more information will be available in the near future. One of the earliest stones dates back to 1745 and is dedicated to the Welsh family. Another dates to 1777 and honours the O’Mahonys of Lackmaloe (a townland name no longer used). We are aware that no gravestone exists for the majority of people buried at Moneycusker. However, if people have any information or history pertaining to family members buried at Moneycusker please contact any member of the Historical Society as there will be a facility for recording such information also. The society will begin the same work at Macloneigh when this project is completed. Kilmichael Historical Society.

Macloneigh Cemetery

Macloneigh Cemetery is in the Kilmichael townland of Farranavarrigane. Macloneigh is actually the name of an ancient parish which pre-dates Kilmichael by several hundred years. Later on it was joined to Kilmichael Parish and for some time the area was known as the United Parishes of Kilmichael and Macloneigh. Gradually only the name Kilmichael was used. Macloneigh is said to be the birthplace of Amergin; the father of St. Finbarr (hence the name Farranavarrigane). St. Finbarr is reputed to have built his first church here, on the banks of the River Lee. Rivers were a familiar and safe way of travelling and Macloneigh was on the route between Gougane Barra and Cork city.
Macloneigh Cemetery contains the ruins of a medieval church. Although now in ruins a beautiful limestone window can still be seen. This would have been a Protestant Church because the site would have been taken over by the Established Church during the Reformation. For many years the Protestant Clergyman of the area lived in the Glebe House beside the churchyard.
Kilmichael Historical Society will shortly be starting a graveyard survey here. Although it does not contain the same number of gravestones as Moneycusker there are some very old headstones and we expect to find some very interesting inscriptions. Anyone who would like to contribute any information about Macloneigh is welcome to contact any member of Kilmichael Historical Society. Kilmichael Historical Society.

Townlands of Kilmichael
In area Kilmichael is one of the largest parishes in the diocese of Cork. It stretches between the towns of Macroom and Dunmanway and between the Lee and the Bandon rivers. There are approximately fifty nine townlands in the parish of Kilmichael. Some townlands have two or more parts. One such example is Toames which is divided into East, West and Bog or Cooldaniel which has East and West. Some townland names are now obsolete. One such example is Lackmalloe; although that name is a very important one in the history of Kilmichael. It was part of either Moneycusker or Ballina. Most townland names go back several hundred years and were certainly there during the Civil Survey of Muskerry in 1654 (this survey will form next week’s article). Most townland names are from the Irish language. One such example is Carrigboy (carraig buí – the yellow rock). Only a small number of Kilmichael townlands have been given an English translation; Greenville, Mountmusic, Haremount and Johnstown. In the case of Johnstown, many people prefer to use the name Cill Eanna. Inchinishingane is often known by the easier to pronounce Antville. In future articles we will look at the translations of some of our townlands. Kilmichael Historical Society.

Civil Survey of Muskerry
In 1654 Kilmichael Parish was surveyed as part of the Civil Survey of Muskerry. The parish was much smaller at the time. Macloneigh was a separate parish. Many names are very similar to the townland names of today. The following is the list: Cooldonell,Lackmalloe & Monckoskair, Tyreyltine, Ardninine & Geartynagawne, Killglass & Killnakokane, Rosnakilly & Knockankinmorny, Garranereagh, Shanchassell & Clashbreadane, Lackareagh, Lissnacodihy, Dessure, Cooldorohy, Coolecleavane, Cossnuiffe, Clonmoyle & Knockanegeyrah, Carrigboy, Mamocky & Gortgrenah, Killtanna, Monygorum, Carrigdangan, Gneeve, Knockowrane & Gortacurrig and The Gleabland.
Many of the western townlands were not included. They were part of East Carbery. The four townlands which are now in English are included here in their Irish form: Killglass (Greenville), Killtanna (Johnstown), Knockowrane (Mountmusic) and Knockanegeyrah (Haremount). A map accompanied the survey but it would be described as highly inaccurate today. Kilmichael Historical Society.

Kilmichael 1766
Anyone studying the history of Kilmichael is lucky to have access to a list of inhabitants of the parish in 1766. The list was compiled by Edward Kenny the Protestant Rector of the parish at the time. He is thought to have been a fluent Irish speaker as were most of the people of the parish. However, he changed many of the surnames to make them sound more English and deprived many surnames of the O’s and Mac’s. It is a valuable record nevertheless, and tells us more about the history of many Kilmichael families. It records the religion of the families. A large number of Callaghans and Hurleys resided in the parish. Many surnames have long since died out. These include names like Malley, Walton, Harris and Sarsfield. Others such as the Kellehers, Dromeys, Cantys and Bradleys live on. Landlords such as the Barters and the Barretts appear. Edward Kenny was one of the few rectors who actually listed the parishioners which gives us one an invaluable list of our ancestors.

Hi all,
I want to say a sincere thank you to all who helped organise and support the Mass at the Mass Rock in Kilnadur last Sunday. I want to thank the Cronin family for the care they take of Kilnadur old church and the rock itself. These are sacred places where our ancestors worshipped the good Lord we believe in. The banter at the organising meetings added to the delight of organising such events.
Personally, I found it a very humbling experience to celebrate Mass at a place that had to be kept secretive from those who had less spiritual motives in the distant past. I want to thank those who helped and provided the refreshments at the ‘cowbox canteen’. It added to the social aspect of our faith “where two or three are gathered ……..”
My sincere thanks to everyone who helped in anyway and supported and attended the event. Looking back if I was doing it again I would probably not have cancelled the 10 am Mass, one lives and learns!!!
I am looking at the possibility of doing something similar at the Toames side of the parish next year, ideas please? Once again, thank you to all. Photos are on the parish website. www.kilmichael.org Fr. Pat

Kilnadur
The history of Christianity in Kilnadur in the parish of Kilmichael dates back through the mists of time. The name Kilnadur means either the church of the ruins or the church of the shrub or bushes. It most probably refers to the Pre-Reformation (16th Century) church which stood on the site of the disused burial in this townland. The 1654 Civil Survey of Muskerry shows that the name Kilnadur was already in use by then. Today the bullaun stones (hollowed out stones used for some religious purpose, possibly for baptisms) and the grave markings are the only evidence of its original use. It is likely that it was used as a burial ground up to more recent times and was possibly used during the famine.

Our Lady’s Footprint
A plaque was unveiled at Haremount last Sunday to mark the location of Our Lady’s Footprint. This shrine is a very special one to the people of the area. It has been a place of pilgrimage for some families for generations. Yet most people in Kilmichael did not know it was there or how to find it. In response to this, Kilmichael Historical Society decided to mark it before it was damaged or forgotten.
The story of the footprint is as follows: During the famine the people of Haremount along with all the parishioners of Kilmichael suffered intolerable hunger and deprivation. One family was wiped out due to starvation. That night, the Blessed Virgin appeared close to the spot where the unfortunate family perished. She told those who saw her to pray devoutly and they would be saved. The following day a ship full of corn arrived into Cork Harbour. The corn was distributed including a portion to the people of Kilmichael. This ensured that there were no further deaths from starvation.
To this day the indentation of Our Lady’s Footprint can be seen on the side of the road in Haremount. Many people still visit to pay homage or pray for a special intention. Like many other places of pilgrimage, tokens were left behind. To this day this lovely Irish custom continues. Kilmichael Historical Society

Kilnadur Part 2
After the Reformation all Roman Catholic Churches were taken over by the Established Protestant Church. This would have happened to the church at Kilnadur also. During the 17th and early 18th century a determined effort was made the supress the Roman Catholic and other dissenting churches. This led to the introduction of the Penal Laws. Mass was forbidden and priests outlawed. Many of these priests now travelled incognito and ministered to the people secretly. People now congregated in secret places to celebrate Mass. The massrock in Kilnadur was one such place. Other massrocks in the area included one at Coolaclevane (Carrig an Aifreann), Cooldaniel and the Commons. The priests took great risks as there was a price on their heads; £20 for information leading to the capture of a priest; £50 for a bishop. As mass was celebrated sentries were posted to warn of approaching danger. A place like the massrock in Kilnadur would have afforded shelter and secrecy with plenty places for the sentries to stand guard. Later some priests were allowed to practice under licence and one of these was a Fr. Denis O’Leary who was parish priest of Kilmichael during the early 1700s. A 1714 list of priests says “Denis O’Leary, Kilmehill and Macloneigh, Suretyes, Edmd Barrett, Thos. Murphy of Curahaly”. Edmd Barrett was probably the landlord of Carrigboy. Kilnadur (Conclusion)
The Penal Church in Kilnadur was probably used when the Penal Laws had been relaxed and simple churches were allowed to be built. It is thought to have had a thatched roof. Its small size ensured it could not have held a large congregation. Therefore, most of the people who gathered here to hear mass would have assembled outside. A similar church was built in the eastern end of Cooldorrihy. It is not known when use of Kilnadur Penal church was discontinued but the 1842 Ordnance Survey Map shows that it was in ruins. We know that the Penal Church in Cooldorrihy was replaced in 1791 as a plaque remains in the sacristy there and the chances are it would have been similar here. At this stage a church had been built at Johnstown and this would have probably replaced the one in Kilnadur. The original church in Johnstown was replaced by the current structure in 1870 (built by Fr. James o’ Driscoll Jnr).
Kilnadur’s educational heritage predates the setting up of the National system of Education in 1831. In 1826 Michael Long taught 30 boys and 10 girls for 10 shillings a year in a building describes as “a miserable hovel built of clay and stone”. It probably stayed in use until the national school was opened in the townland. Kilmichael Historical Society

Education in Kilmichael

The National System of Education began in Ireland in 1831. The parish priest of Kilmichael Fr. James O’Driscoll Snr had opened the first school in Kilmichael under the Rules for National Education in Toames by 1833. However, these were not the first schools in Kilmichael Parish. Moneycusker had a Biblical School to cater for the Church of Ireland population. There were also hedge schools or paying schools which predated national schools. During the 1820s there were many of these schools in Kilmichael. They were run by Roman Catholics and had well over three hundred and fifty pupils. One was at Macloneigh and run by Thomas Holland. The others were at Cooldorrihy (teacher Corneilus Cronin), Clonmoyle (teacher Daniel Donovan), Gortacurrig (teacher James Mahony), Moneycusker (teacher Denis Nowlan), Kilnadur (Michael Long), Gurteen (teacher Timothy Sullivan) and Clashbredane (John Buckley). The pupils were taught in cabins. However, the condition of these ranged from “wretched hovels” to “very badly thatched”. Salaries varied from two shillings to ten shillings per annum. Despite this the pupils studied a wide range of subjects. The presence of these schools explained why the people of Kilmichael so readily accepted the introduction of national education. Cornelius Cotter, Curradrinagh (1881-1950),
Kilmichael Ambush Participant In the lead up to the Kilmichael Ambush Tom Barry was fully aware of the strength of the Auxiliary force his group was to engage at Kilmichael. With this in mind, some non-flying column personnel were asked to take part. Cornelius was one such individual. He was a noted shot and hunted fowl regularly. He lived quite close to the ambush site so would have an excellent knowledge of the local terrain. He was by far the oldest volunteer at thirty nine. Cornelius made his way to the ambush site with little military training and his side-by-side double barrel shotgun. The others around him had .303 rifles and 35 rounds each and were trained by Barry specifically for the event.
Cornelius took part in the First Section which engaged the first of the two Crossley Tenders. The ambush was an intense ordeal. In the aftermath, sixteen Auxiliaries lay dead and one badly wounded. Two IRA volunteers were also dead and sixteen year old Pat Deasy was mortally wounded but still alive. Barry had to force the Flying Column to drill on the road to return their composure.
The group then headed south towards Gloun Cross with their haul of captured materials and casualties. Barry and most of the group had to move on quickly to the far away camp at Granure. Cornelius was put in charge of the small group detailed to take care of the dead and wounded. This small group proceeded to Buttimer’s of Gortroe where Pat Deasy finally succumbed around 10.00pm that night. The three bodies were buried temporarily in a nearby bog. Kilmichae Historical Society has placed a marker cross at the spot. They were later moved to the cemetery at Castletown Kenneigh. The experience of the battle and its aftermath must have been difficult for many of the volunteers. But they dealt with the challenge admirably.
Cornelius never married and lived out a quiet life at Curradrinagh. He rarely spoke of the events that day and night as was the way with many of the volunteers.
May they rest in peace. Kilmichael Historical Society

The Kilmichael Ambush- National Significance Part 1
It may be argued that the Kilmichael ambush had national significance on two counts. Firstly, the IRA engaged the Auxiliary Division for the first time, and secondly, following British forces machine gunning civilians at Croke Park the previous (Bloody) Sunday, the events at Kilmichael recalibrated the War of Independence back to a conflict, for the most part, between armed men.
As the War of Independence progressed, the British establishment gradually incremented the response to events in Ireland. At the outbreak of hostilities the Royal Irish Constabulary was tasked to deal with the unrest. There were large scale defections from the RIC so much so that regular army units were called up to assist. The Essex Regiment were posted in the Kilmichael area. These units were not able to cope with the unrest. In January 1920, demobilised former World War 1 veterans were called upon. The British army had to use improvised uniforms for this group, the infamous Black and Tans uniform. As each new British group was introduced their ill conduct became more pronounced.
Finally, the British played their last card; in July 1920 the Auxiliary Division Royal Irish Constabulary was introduced. A force such as this was never used in warfare previously; each Auxiliary was a former commissioned officer with WWI experience. These were not standard enlisted men; each Auxiliary had extensive military academy training, could ‘think individually in the heat of battle’ and was heavily armed. Their modern equivalent would be a ‘Special Forces’ unit such as the Irish Army Ranger Wing or the British SAS. The IRA had avoided all contact with this group following their introduction. Tom Barry knew that they would have to be confronted and the site at Kilmichael was chosen to do this. In the Auxiliaries first engagement in Ireland, this ‘super fighting force’ was completely defeated. The Kilmichael ambush rocked the British establishment to the core. The British now knew no matter what force they deployed into the field a military victory could not be achieved in Ireland. Kilmichael Historical Society

Kilmichael Ambush – National Significance Part 2
Up to November 1920 approximately 300 people had been killed on both sides in the War of Independence. A major escalation of violence was to begin that month including the Kilmichael Ambush.
On Bloody Sunday 21st November Michael Collins ordered the assassination of fourteen British intelligence agents in Dublin. Later that day British forces entered Croke Park and shot indiscriminately into the crowd killing fourteen including Michael Hogan a Tipperary footballer. The Hogan Stand carried his name today. Sixty five others were injured. At an Irish Cabinet meeting a few days later Cathal Brugha suggested ‘taking the front line to Britain’ ordering the IRA machine gunning crowds queuing for cinemas (this was a time before the development of sophisticated explosive materials which were to have devastating consequences a few decades later).
The following Sunday 28th November the IRA ambushed a unit of Auxiliaries killing seventeen at Kilmichael. The magnitude of the threat posed by the Auxiliaries was explored in last Sunday’s newsletter. The Kilmichael ambush may be seen as a realignment of the War of Independence back to, for the most part, a conflict between armed groups of men.
A few weeks later on 11-12th December Cork city centre was in flames. Following Kilmichael IRA commanders knew a front line in Britain was not necessary despite any British provocation. The IRA never carried out a major offensive operation in Britain or against civilians during the War of Independence. Kilmichael Historical Society

National Education in Kilmichael
The National System of Education began in Ireland in 1831 and by the year 1833 the progressive Parish Priest of Kilmichael Fr. James O’Driscoll Snr had already opened a national school in Toames. This building remains today. It was a most unusual school building as it was two storey. The girls were taught upstairs and the boys downstairs.
In 1837, Fr. O’Driscoll applied for aid towards the building of Dromleigh N.S. The trustees were to be Maurice Healy and Tim O’Leary, both of Cooldorrihy and Denis O’Driscoll of Clonmoyle. The application was signed by both Catholics and Protestants. They included Thomas Barter, Henry and John Wilkinson, the Parish Priest Fr. O’Driscoll, Dominick Murphy CC and Edward and John Barrett.
Their application was successful and the school opened its doors on Monday 13th June 1840. Its first teacher was the twenty one year old Cal O’Callaghan. By September of 1840 two hundred and thirty two children were enrolled. Dromleigh Girls School was opened in 1842. The first teacher was Mary Sullivan. The two schools existed in the one roomed school with the assistance of two monitors. By then two hundred and sixty pupils were enrolled. It would be impossible to imagine any school existing in such cramped conditions today. Kilmichael Historical Society
